Cardiff University has been a major part of my life for 22 years.

When I arrived in 1986 I was, like every new student I suppose, both tentative and excited.

I was from Swansea and that was extra spice - the boys back home couldn’t believe my disloyalty!

After graduating in English and after many poor, poor jobs and misspent years I found myself back at the University and in the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, where I now lecture and research.

I feel an immense loyalty and affection to this great institution.

I still remember the pride I felt, as the first person in my family to go to University, when I first passed through Main Building.

And now, on summer days in Alexandra Gardens, as the sun shines down and the lush green grass is strewn with students, I think there can be no better place in Britain to study and work.

Dr John Jewell is the First Year Tutor, Schools Liaison Officer, Open Day Coordinator and Deputy Chair of the Undergraduate Board of Studies at the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies.
