Having worked for 12 years in the United States at the University of Massachusetts, I decided to return to the UK in 2000. I was attracted to Cardiff because of the strength of its research in Mass Communication and Cultural Studies, its mix of humanities and social science approaches, and its high profile in the industry.

Since 2000, the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies has gone from strength to strength. Weve increased our research income more than tenfold since the last Research Assessment Exercise, and there is nowhere in the UK better to be for someone working in my field now. The School offers a unique environment whereby we excel at both training students for industry and at undertaking high quality research projects. This link between practice and research is, I think, what makes the School here so strong. It is also why the industry and policy makers often approach us when they want to commission research.

In the last few years Ive worked with the BBC on the coverage of the Iraq War, 24 hour news and the use of user generated content in news; with the BBC Trust on coverage of devolved politics; with the Office of Science and Innovation on media coverage of science; with the Guardian on the independence of British journalism; with Channel Four on the coverage of Islam; as well as doing research on the media and political citizenship and media and the public understanding of science for the Economic and Social Research Council. At the heart of all these projects is my interest in how the media might enhance a diverse and democratic culture in the UK.

There is also a thriving and energetic research culture in the School and the great pleasure of much of this research is that it has been collaborative, involving over a dozen different colleagues in the School. I can think of few other institutions in our field anywhere in the world - where such a level of engagement would be possible.
