Chris McGuigan

Professor Chris McGuigan is Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation & Enterprise and is responsible for the University’s research activity, innovation, including commercialisation and the broader economic impact of the University. His specific responsibilities include the development of the University’s research, innovation, and enterprise strategy and its implementation and monitoring; oversight of cross-University Research Institutes; and preparations for the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014. As Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor McGuigan is also a member of the University Executive Board.

Professor Chris McGuigan’s major research interest is in new drug discovery and development for HIV, hepatitis C, herpes, influenza, cancer and osteoarthritis. He is the inventor of three novel drug candidates now in clinical trial, FV-100 for shingles, INX-189 for hepatitis C and NUC-1031 for pancreatic cancer.

Amongst his other key achievements, Professor McGuigan is the inventor of phosphoramidate ProTides, a new drug delivery and discovery motif applied by GSK, Roche, NewBiotics, Inhibitex/BMS, Gilead/Pharmasset & Nucana Biomed, with five agents in clinical trial to date. Two of his new drug discoveries, INX-189 and FV-100 were the key drivers behind the $2.5Bn buyout of Inhibitex by BMS in January 2012.

Prof McGuigan sits on the Welsh Government’s life science sector panel, and is President of the Cardiff Scientific Society.

During his time at Cardiff Professor McGuigan has been awarded ca £10M in research grants and more than £2M of license income. He has published over 200 peer reviewed papers and is the recipient of numerous awards including the 2006 Royal Society of Chemistry

Industrially-sponsored Award in Medicinal Chemistry, the GlaxoSmithKline International Achievement Award for 2004 and a 2012 Inspire Wales Award.

Professor McGuigan graduated in 1979 with First Class Honours from the University of Birmingham where he also obtained his Ph.D. in Anticancer Drug Design in 1982. He was appointed as Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation & Enterprise in September 2012.
