Cochrane Building (Medical Education Centre)

The Cochrane Building is located off Heath Park Way, next to the Neuadd Meirionnydd building.  

 

 


Vehicular Access

Vehicular access can be obtained off Heath Park Way, turning into Car Parks 16, 17 or 18.  Please see locations and maps for further information and the parking information below.

 


Pedestrian Access

Pedestrian access to the Cochrane Building from the concourse, Ty Dewi Sant and Car Park 17 areas is via two routes.  Stepped access (left photograph above) leads to the main entrance of the Cochrane Building. There are 10 steps, a landing, then 8 steps.  There are handrails on both sides and in the centre.  There are tactile markings at the beginning and end of the steps.  There are resting benches close to the steps and the Cochrane Building.  

The level access route is through the Michael Griffith Building (right photograph above).  Take the lift from the lower ground floor to the ground floor turn right out of the lift, straight ahead and right out of the exit door. Follow the paved area to the right of the car park around to the entrance of the Cochrane Building.

Parking Information

Please note that all parking on the Heath Campus is managed by Vinci Parking.  Please  click here for further information on Vinci Parking . There is a map of the parking facilities at the Heath Campus on the right hand side of this page called 'Heath CP Map'.  

The closest car parks to the Cochrane Building are Car Parks 16, 17 and 18. There are currently 3 accessible parking bays in car park 17.    

Please note, several accessible bays and a drop off point are due to be added to the above car parks.

 


Main and Side Entrance

There is level access to the main entrance of the Cochrane Building (left photograph above).  There is a very shallow gradient to the right of the entrance, gradient of 1/23.  There are several resting benches close to the main entrance.  The main entrance door is a manual door and some people might require assistance to open this door.

The side entrance (right photograph above) is close to the Neuadd Meirionnydd building and close to the IV Lounge entrance.  There is a shallow ramp leading up to the door, gradient of 1/16.  There are handrails on both sides of the ramp and there are resting benches provided close to the entrance door.  The side entrance door is a manual door and some people might require assistance to open this door.  

 


Reception

The reception desk is staffed during opening hours between 7am and 5pm. There is a low section on the left of the reception desk. Reception desk telephone number is 029 2068 8200.

 


Toilet Facilities

There is an accessible toilet, like the above photograph, on every floor. There are 2 accessible toilets on the third floor.  The location of each toilet is indicated on the accessible plans on the right hand side of this page.

 


Lifts

There are two main lifts which service all 5 floors in the building.

The lift call button is 1050mm high from the floor.

The opening door width is 900mm.

The lift car is 2100mm x 1100mm.

There is a mirror at the back of the lift and a handrail.

Buttons in the lift are positioned between 890mm and 1100mm from the floor.  The lift has tactile buttons.

There is visual and audio level information.

 


Resting Areas

On the ground floor there is a resting area close to the lifts.  There are also resting areas within the Health Library on the ground floor in the Social Learning Space.  There is a resting area on the second floor close to the lifts.

 


Emergency Evacuation

The emergency exit route is clearly labelled (the green running man) and there are 5 exits in total on the ground floor.  Please take the time to familiarise yourself with the exits and exit routes. The exits are shown on the plan on the right hand side of this screen. 

If you think you might require assistance in the event of an emergency evacuation, you must arrange a Personalised Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) as soon as possible. Students must contact their School Disability Contact to arrange a PEEP. Staff will need to contact their School / Division Disability Contact or their manager to arrange a PEEP.  Please remember that it is your responsibility to inform the relevant person that you require a PEEP to be set up.   

In an emergency evacuation the lifts must not be used.  For anyone unable to safely evacuate using the stairs, there are safe refuge points located in every stair well on each upper floor.  Refuge points are sign posted.  When at the refuge point, you must press the intercom and speak to security to inform them that your require assistance.  Security will communicate information to you in relation to what is happening and reassure you.  You should remain in the refuge area until advised otherwise or someone comes to your assistance.  The refuge points are located such as to provide a safe area for at least 30 minutes in the event of a real fire.   

 


Floors 0 - 5

The ground floor houses the Health Library Social Learning Space, Pool Rooms, Reception and computer facilities.  

The first floor houses the Health Library, IT training rooms and offices. There is a water fountain by the main lifts. 

The second floor houses the Post Graduate Reception (low desks are available) and the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board offices (card swipe access only. Card reader is positioned 1100mm from the floor). There is a resting area by the main lifts. 

The third floor houses the Clinical Skills Centre and is card swipe access only. The card reader is positioned 1100mm from the floor. There is a water fountain by the main lifts. 

The fourth floor houses the simulation centre and is card swipe access only. The card reader is positioned 1100mm from the floor. There is a water fountain by the main lifts. 

The fifth floor houses the Institute of Medical Education Offices and is card swipe access only. The card reader is positioned 1100mm from the floor. There is a water fountain by the main lifts.

 


Pool Rooms

Computer Facilities

Computer stations are available in the main corridor of the Cochrane Building.  There is a high bench and a low bench.  The low section is 720mm from the floor to the top of the counter and there is a clear height of 690mm underneath the counter.  Other computer facilities are available in the Health Library, please click here for further information.  

 


Health Library and Social Learning Space

The Social Learning Space is situated on the ground floor (photographs above).  There is a range of different seating available and some have network and power sockets available at a low level, which are fitted into the seat.  Refreshment machines are also available within the Social Learning Space.

There is a book return available on the ground floor of the Social Learning Space.  The touch screen is positioned 1200mm from the floor.  The card reader is positioned 980mm from the floor and the surface is 930mm from the floor.  There is a TV available in the Social Learning Space on a table which is 600mm high. 

There is a lift in the Social Learning Space which provides access to the Health Library.  The main lifts also provide access to the library.  The lift from the Social Learning Space provides access to the first and second floors only.  

The lift call button is 1050mm high from the floor.

The lift car is 1500mm x 1100mm.

There is a mirror at the back of the lift and a handrail.

Buttons in the lift are positioned between 900mm and 1050mm from the floor.  The lift has tactile buttons.

There is visual and audio level information in the lift.

The library reception desk is located opposite the lift.  The reception desk is 750mm high and there are knee spaces on both sides.

There is between 750mm and 770mm space between book stacks.  If you require any assistance with locating a book, please ask at the reception or telephone 029 2068 8137.
