Ghana

Background

Cardiff University enjoys welcoming students from Ghana every year to the University, to join our thriving West African community.

Our Country Manager, Mrs Rhian Curtis, visits Ghana at least once a year to conduct interviews with interested students, and has attended exhibitions with both the British Council and our educational agents.

Alumni from Cardiff University have made some remarkable achievements in Ghana, and it has been a pleasure to meet so many of our former students, who now hold great jobs in government Ministries, in the private sector, in fields of Transport, Law, Engineering, Journalism & Media, to name but a few! We are proud that our Cardiff students are doing so well and representing the University at the highest levels.

News in Ghana

Cardiff University's Mike McGovern is a fourth year medical student who's been training midwives in Ghana using a training model developed here in Wales. One in eight women die in Africa because of complications during pregnancy. Mike hopes that with the help of realistic training scenarios, the childbirth process would be a more positive one in the future. Read more...

Requirements for entry onto programmes at Cardiff University

International Foundation Programme

  • We ask for evidence of strong results in your WAEC exams, with a majority of B grades, however, for some of the most competitive subjects, A grades will also be required. A minimum of a C grade in English is required for visa purposes also, in addition to sitting an IELTS test, in order to comply with UKBA regulations.

Undergraduate

  • If you hold either the WAEC qualification and a Foundation programme from a recognised and reputable institution, or the equivalent of A levels, then we would welcome an application from you. Please contact us if you are unsure whether your qualification is appropriate.

Postgraduate taught

  • You will be asked to provide evidence of having completed your Undergraduate programme in a related field, at an academically high level (usually the equivalent of an Upper Second grade or higher). Work experience can also contribute towards gaining a placement in many subjects also.

Postgraduate research

  • We ask that you hold an MSc degree with a high grade, particularly in the research elements. A full research proposal should also be prepared, and we advise that you explore the website of the academic school where you wish to study, and search for any supervisors whose areas of interest match your own research interests. We advise that you contact the relevant supervisors to introduce yourself and your research just prior to submitting your application, attaching your completed research proposal.

English language requirements

  • Whilst Ghana is, of course, recognised as an English speaking country, for the purpose of complying with the UK Border Agency (UKBA) rules, we are asking that students demonstrate their English language abilities. We are constantly reviewing our admissions systems, whilst also abiding by the changes in UK entry laws. Please don't hesitate to contact us on international@cardiff.ac.uk should you have any further questions about this.

If you obtained your WAEC or IGCSE with a level C or above, in the last 2 years, then this will be no problem for you if you are coming to study for your Bachelors Degree. However, due to recent changes, if you wish to study for a Foundation Degree, then you will be required to sit an IELTS test, to comply with immigration laws.

At Bachelors and Postgraduate level, even if you have attended an English speaking University or School, or conducted your job through the medium of English, then we will need further evidence of English language ability before we can issue unconditional offers.

    This can be demonstrated by:
    • stipulating in your application's personal statement that you are currently working or studying through the medium of English;
    • obtaining two references which also mention your use of English language e.g. if you are working, then you are using English in a professional and skilled capacity, or a reference from an academic tutor to confirm that your course was taught through the medium of English and that you were successful in this.

Visits to Ghana

The next visit to Ghana will take place later in 2012, dates to be confirmed. Complete the form at the bottom of this page and we will send you an email when we're coming to Ghana: www.cardiff.ac.uk/international

Our representatives are open all year round to provide advice and guidance (contact details above).

Cardiff University and Ghana

Cardiff University received applications from 121 students from Ghana last year. A huge number, representing our popularity across the country!

Many of these students were attracted by the amount of research that has been undertaken in the country; Professors in Cardiff’s School of Engineering, and its Geoenvironmental Research Centre, have linked with the UN to explore the management and disposal of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). It is widely recognised that POPs are eco-toxic and if not disposed properly, pose significant threats to human and animal health.

A project Group from Cardiff’s Centre for Business Relationships, Accountability, Sustainability and Society (BRASS) group has collaborated with Professors in the University of Ghana examining land disputes and the role of companies’ CSR (corporate social responsibility) programmes in mining areas of Ghana, and a further study examining the role of women in the mining industry. For more information visit the BRASS website.
