Successful applicants are able to carry our research in a top European institution whilst having the chance to experience everyday life in a different European country for between 6 months and three years.

International Students

British Council Fellowship

British Council Fellowship grants are for postgraduate study or research. Grants range from short attachments to research leading to a PhD. The grants vary in size from small grants to fellowships which will cover fees and living expenses.

British Council Fellowships are awarded by the local British Council Director; he or she decides the subject areas that will be eligible for a grant and selects the candidates. You must apply to the British Council office in your own country for a fellowship.

You usually need to be a national and a resident of the country you apply in. If you are considered for a grant, you will be interviewed in your own country.

Contact: The British Council office in your own country.

Commonwealth Scholarships

The scholarships are for postgraduate study or research and so you will need to have a university degree or equivalent qualification. However, if there are no undergraduate courses in a particular subject in your own country or regional university, then it might be possible for you to apply to do a first degree course under this scheme.

You are eligible for a Commonwealth Scholarship if you are a citizen of either a Commonwealth country (not the Commonwealth of Independent States) or a British dependent territory. You should be aged under 35 and a permanent resident of your country.

Grants are for one to three years and usually cover the cost of travel, tuition fees and living expenses. There may, in some cases, be additional allowances for help with books or clothes. An allowance may be paid to help you with the cost of maintaining your spouse.

Contact: The Commonwealth Scholarship Agency in your own country. Agency addresses are listed in Appendix II of the Commonwealth Universities Yearbook. If you are already in the UK, the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) can help you with general information concerning the scheme, but it cannot issue application forms to overseas students

International Agencies and Organisations
Awards schemes are also funded in some countries by international agencies and organisations, such as UNESCO or the EU.

Contact the UNESCO or EU office in your country, or your government's education department.
