Telephone Functions

Central Campus

Main Features Available

Every feature is not available to every telephone extension. Each extension has been allocated a Class Of Service (COS) / Least Cost Routing (LCOS) in accordance with the request from the Head of School / Department. The COS / COR options are:

Class of Service (COS) Features Available
1Call Diversion Call Hold (and retrieve) Transfer, Camp-on, Callback, Conference Call Account Code (for private calls).
LCOS Calls Which May Be Made
1Internal and emergency
2Internal, emergency and local calls.
3Internal, emergency, local and national calls and mobile phones.
5Internal, emergency, local, national, mobile phones and IDD (international calls).

If an attempt is made to access a feature or service which is not available at that extension, the call will divert to the University operator.

To Make An Outside Call

Dial 9 followed by the number required.

Speedcall Dialling

Certain frequently dialled outside numbers have been allocated "speedcall" codes, i.e. four-digit codes beginning with digit 8, when dialled these codes translate into the appropriate public network number. A list of "speedcall" codes is included in the Communications Directory.

Regular users of speedcall numbers should note that the four-digit speedcall codes merely abbreviate the dialling of other organisations' main switchboard telephone numbers. Speedcalls are therefore of use only to Cardiff University's central telephone system extension users.

It should also be noted that some of the organisations have the same Direct Dialling Inward (DDI) facility that the University has to enable direct contact with extension users without main switchboard intervention. Telephone users are therefore advised to use known DDI numbers of other organisations, in preference to the speedcall codes listed, to achieve speedier connection and therefore more efficient use of the limited number of exchange lines.

Last Number Redial

The LR button on certain telephones redials the last number dialled (internal or external).

Callback

When an extension is dialled which is busy or does not answer, callback will monitor that extension and call you back when it is ready for your call. When the callback activates, your extension rings with a distinctive interrupted ring.

To use Callback:On hearing busy tone or failing to get an answer, dial callback code (1) and replace receiver.
To cancel all Callbacks:Lift handsets and dial callback cancel code (##1); replace receiver

Camp-On

When an extension is dialled which is busy, you may "Camp-on" the line signalling the user of the extension called (with a warning beep) that you are waiting on the line.

To use Camp-On:On hearing busy tone, dial Camp-on code (3) and stay on the line (NB DO NOT REPLACE RECEIVER).
To answer a Camp-On :Either finish existing call and replace receiver (your telephone will then ring again immediately) or warn existing caller you wish to interrupt call, press recall, dial Camp-on retrieve code (#3).
To retrieve your fist caller, dial call hold retrieve code (#2) and resume conversation.

Call-Transfer

To transfer a call from your extension to another extension:Press recall, dial extension number, replace handset (you may speak to the extension before replacing handset).
To retrieve the call if the extension is busy:Press recall

Conference Calls

A Conference Call may be set up with up to 2 other telephones (7 other telephones if the conference call is initiated from an Optiset feature phone).

To invoke a Conference Call:Dial first number, obtain answer and press recall; dial second number, obtain answer and press recall. Each user dialled is placed "on hold". When all required numbers are held on the line, dial the conference code (*7) to invoke the conference call.

Group Pick-Up

Group Pick-Up is a centrally programmed feature. Information may be obtained from the Executive Officer, Telecommunications..

Extensions which have been programmed into "Pick Up Groups" may "pick-up" calls from another ringing extension in the same Pick Up Group.

To use Pick-Up:Lift receiver (of your extension), dial pick-up code (*6), dial number of ringing extension.

Call-Forwarding

Call forwarding provides telephone users with the facility to divert incoming calls from their own extension to other extensions. Effective use of this feature will ensure that no incoming call remains unanswered. The call forwarding options are:

1/ Call Forward: Variable Destination :
i.e. All calls are diverted from your extension without ringing it.

Lift receiver, dial "Variable Destination" code (*11) followed by the extension number
to which the calls are to be forwarded.

To cancel Call Forward Variable Destination

Lift receiver, dial #11, ensure normal dial tone returns.

2/ To set up Call Forward : Preset Destination:
:i.e. Unanswered calls to your extension are diverted to the desired extension

Lift receiver, dial the "Programme Preset Destination" code (*21) followed by the
required destination extension number. A confirmation tone is heard.

To enable this programming

Lift receiver, dial the "Preset Destination"code (*11) and replace the receiver.

To cancel Call Forward : Preset Destination:

Lift receiver, dial #11, ensure normal dial tone.
NB: This cancels the activation of the call forwarding but the destination extension
programmed is retained for further use unless changed by re programming.

Call Privacy, Call Override and Do Not Disturb features

These are not generally available.
