Open Access – maximising research impact

31 October 2011

Researchers and research staff across Cardiff University recently had the opportunity to discuss the benefits of providing Open Access to research at an event to launch Information Services' new Manage My Publications service as part of International Open Access Week 2011.

The event featured well-known experts in research and Open Access, including Prof Chris McGuigan (Deputy Pro Vice Chancellor, Research), Prof Stevan Harnad, Canada Research Chair in Cognitive Sciences at Université du Québec à Montréal, American Scientist Open Access Forum and Southampton University, and Ben Ryan, Senior Evaluation Manager of the EPSRC.

The event highlighted the role that Open Access to research plays, not only in increasing citations to your research, but also in strengthening Cardiff University's performance in the Research Excellence Framework (REF).

In his video presentation, Prof Harnad highlighted the importance of Open Access for maximising research usage and impact. In requiring submissions to the Online Research @ Cardiff (ORCA) institutional repository, Cardiff is in good company, as Harvard, UCL and MIT have all mandated the use of Open Access repositories for their research.

Ben Ryan of the EPSRC demonstrated the support which all of the Research Funding Councils attach to Open Access,  to make publicly funded research available to anyone freely at the point of use (although he reminded the audience that there is always a cost involved in making this possible). He also highlighted the need to transition to a sustainable Open Access business model which is created in co-operation with publishers.

Janet Peters, University Librarian, said: "The benefits of providing Open Access to research are becoming ever more prominent as Universities prepare for the REF. This event, and our guest speakers, have enabled Cardiff's research community to learn how they can use the new web service, Manage My Publications, and ORCA,  to participate in the Open Access movement. These benefits include increasing citations to research, and ensuring that academia and wider society can benefit from the sharing of world-leading research."
