SCOLAR shares the spotlight

An image from the souvenir programme at the opening of Main Building in October 1909 projected onto the building.

A number of images have been illuminating Cardiff’s night sky, being beamed onto the University's buildings as part of a project organised by the Welsh School of Architecture and the University's PR team.

One of the images featured in the promotion was from SCOLAR, the University's Special Collections and Archives collection. Beamed onto Main Building, the image was taken from the souvenir programme for the opening of Main Building in 1909.

Festivities around the opening of the Main Building of the then-University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire included an evening reception the day after the official opening hosted by the Earl and Countess of Plymouth.

Peter Keelan, Head of Special Collections and Archives, said: "I was delighted to see the souvenir programme image beamed onto Main Building, alongside the more modern images. The Main Building is still recognisable from the programme, over 100 years on from its opening."
