A nursing first for Wales

12 December 2007

Wales has become the first country in the UK and the third in Europe to be accepted into an honour society that recognises distinction in nursing, thanks to a project involving Cardiff University.

Emeritus Professor Ann Tucker, former Head of the School of Nursing at the University, has worked jointly with Professor Joy Merrell of Swansea University for the last six years to build up a catalogue of evidence about nursing excellence in Wales.

As a result of their work, Wales has now received its Charter as a Chapter of the Honour Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International. The new Chapter, which will be called Upsilon Xi provides an opportunity for nurses from all over Wales to become a part of a global community of nurse leaders.

Membership to Sigma Theta Tau is awarded to nurses who have excelled academically, as well as to those who have made outstanding contributions to nursing.

The Society encourages and supports professional development in nursing, and actively promotes aspects of scholarship, leadership, creativity and commitment to nursing as key mission statements to its members.

Cardiff University Emeritus Professor Ann Tucker said: "It has taken us six years to demonstrate the wealth of nursing talent that we have in Wales and to build up evidence for our Chapter. Membership of Sigma Theta Tau now gives the nursing community right across Wales the opportunity to have their achievements recognised as part of this prestigious society."

Professor Merrell of Swansea University, the new President for the Wales Chapter, said: "This achievement is the culmination of six years work in building the membership and providing a programme of scholarly events. Achieving Chapter status will provide a number of opportunities for nurse leaders in Wales to further international collaborations, gain access to a number of resources including research grants and promote the professional development of nurses, who strive to improve nursing care worldwide."

The Chartering Ceremony for Wales will be held in Swansea on the 4th April 2008.
