Rethinking political world views

10 November 2007

The latest book by Cardiff University’s newly elected Fellow of the British Academy will be the topic of a conference (15-16 November) exploring issues of race and gender.

World-leading political theorist, Professor Carole Pateman, School of European Studies is co-author of a new book Contract and Domination written with Professor Charles Mills, Northwestern University, Chicago.

Contract and Domination (Polity Press 2007) challenges an area of contemporary political theory (contract theory) which neglects issues of gender and ignores issues of race. The book argues that the theory should either be fundamentally rethought or abandoned altogether.

Conference organiser, Professor David Boucher, School of European Studies said: "The conference is multidisciplinary and of interest to philosophers, political theorists, race/gender theorists, sociologists and policy practitioners. It has attracted the leading figures in multiculturalism, race and gender studies, such as Tariq Modood and Chandran Kukathas, to discuss Professor Pateman’s ideas."

Earlier this year Professor Pateman was elected a Fellow of the British Academy, the national Academy for the humanities and social sciences. She was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Political Studies Association of the United Kingdom in 2004 and the Benjamin E Lippincott Award by the American Political Science Association for her book The Sexual Contract. The Lippincott Award recognises a work of exceptional quality by a living political theorist.
