A new shop in the Students’ Union which will make IT equipment more readily available to staff and students has been officially opened by Lord Kinnock, President of Cardiff University.
The IT Shop has been developed by the Students’ Union in partnership with Cardiff University’s Information Services Directorate and RM plc – one of the University’s principal IT suppliers.
Market research indicates that 90% of new students buy a laptop or PC to bring to University to support their study. The shop has been established to ensure students have the equipment they need to support their learning experience at Cardiff.
Students Union President Jonny Cox said: "The formal opening of this facility is testament to the shared vision between the University and the Union in offering our students' a world-leading IT solution. It is a service that reflects both the University's and the Union's drive to enhance the student experience here at Cardiff."
The shop provides laptops and desktop PCs to students and staff on a lease, rental or purchase basis. All equipment is pre-equipped to be used on the University network from anywhere on campus, including Halls of Residence and through wireless access points. The shop also provides a repair service in liaison with the Information Services Directorate to create a one-stop-shop for all staff and students.
Lord Kinnock, former president of the Students’ Union between 1965-66, said: "In my time as President the most technological equipment we had was an electric typewriter! It’s fantastic to see that the students and staff at Cardiff University are being provided with opportunities to advance with the technology developments in the world today."
The IT Shop is based on the first floor of the Students Union Building. Purchases can also be made online, see www.cardiffstudents.com/theitshop.
