Ambassadorial visits

Cardiff has hosted visits from the UK ambassadors and high commissioners of five overseas nations in recent weeks.

The ambassadors had expressed an interested in seeing the University’s work while on visits to Wales organised by the Welsh Government.

The most recent visit was by the High Commissioner for Canada, Mr Gordon Campbell. This formed part of a wider visit by the Canadian Government to discuss current and future ties between Canada and Wales. Mr Campbell met with the Vice-Chancellor, Dr David Grant and other senior University figures to discuss Cardiff’s international objectives, research strengths and areas of mutual interest. The Canadian delegation also met representatives of the Sustainable Places Research Institute and discussed common interests in the environment and green energy and buildings.

Earlier, the Russian Ambassador His Excellency Dr Alexander Vladimirovich Yakovenko visited to learn about the University’s future plans and to discuss further links with Russia. He also spoke to academics from the Schools of Mathematics and Engineering about their research and connections to Russia.

He was followed by the Turkish Ambassador His Excellency Mr Ahmet Ünal Çeviköz Büyükelçi was welcomed by the University at Aberdare Hall. Mr Büyükelçi met with Turkish students and members of staff, including representatives of Cardiff Business School.

His Excellency Mr Abdulrahman Ghanem Almutaiwee, the United Arab Emirates Ambassador, toured the School of Architecture. He met with senior academics and talking to students in the sky dome and wind tunnel facilities. He also met representatives of Cardiff Business School and the Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK.

The School of Law was the host for the Czech Ambassador, His Excellency Mr Michael Zantovsky. He spoke with the Head of School, Professor Nigel Lowe and also with European students currently studying at the School under the Erasmus programme.

Professor Hywel Thomas, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Engagement and International, said: "The University has established many strong partnerships overseas, helping to spread the benefits of our research and teaching worldwide. The fact that so many ambassadors expressed an interest in seeing our work on site reflects the strength of these partnerships. All five visitors took a lively interest in the University's work and we hope to build further strong links with each of their respective nations. We are also extremely grateful to the Welsh Government for finding time for us during each ambassador’s visit here."
