Cardiff's ambition and strategic direction is set out in The Way Forward 2012-2017.

In five years’ time, Cardiff University will consistently be among the top 100 universities in the world. The principles of excellence and capacity building will underpin the University’s “Research, Innovation and Enterprise” strategy. We will ensure that our research has global impact by tackling the grand challenges of our time. We will embark on a large-scale new build project to strengthen the “Research, Innovation and Enterprise” infrastructure of the University.

Cardiff already has international recognition as a successful, research-intensive university; the challenge is to enhance that position on an increasingly competitive international stage. The “Research, Innovation and Enterprise” strategy sets out how we will deliver against our ambitions, to ensure that we are best positioned to contribute to the skills, jobs and economic growth agendas.

In pursuing our ambition we will:

  • Concentrate our efforts and resources on research excellence with impact;
  • Ensure that we pursue an ambitious agenda in all research related matters;
  • Recognise that we have an important role to play in contributing to the national economy;
  • Respond to social justice and human well-being challenges;
  • Translate our research excellence into economic and social benefits;
  • Build capacity through the recruitment, development and retention of high quality staff and students;
  • Implement strong and effective staff performance procedures;
  • Embark on ambitious research and innovation infrastructure new build projects;
