Reading French Newspapers (1914-1940) - 10 credits (HST825)

This course explores the nature, potential and pitfalls of using newspapers as a source for the social, cultural, gender and political history of France before 1914. The newspapers used are those of political parties (the Action libérale populaire, the Ligue de la Patrie française and the Ligue des patriotes), as well as the daily paper Le français. Students will discuss and evaluate the different ways in which newspapers may be read – hermeneutics, deconstruction, reading against the grain, for example).
