Research work carried out in the conservation laboratories of the School of History and Archaeology in Cardiff University has already been part of the winning team for one major award and is now short listed for two other top UK Conservation Awards. Senior Lecturer David Watkinson and Research Assistant Mark Lewis examined the corrosion of chloride infested iron in low humidity.


Their results were used by the ss Great Britain Trust to design and implement a desiccated storage system to control the rampant corrosion of Brunel’s famous iron ship. This innovative design won the 2006 Gulbenkian Museum prize, which is the top Museum Award in Britain.

It is one of three short-listed projects for the prestigious UK Conservation Awards programme. The Cardiff University research programme into iron corrosion and its applications within other areas of conservation practice, has also been short listed for the Anna Plowden Trust Research and Innovation in Conservation Award. This is the major UK research award within the field of cultural heritage conservation.
