Researching Islam and Muslims in Britain (1)

This module comprises three main elements:

1) Collection and Analysis of Qualitative Data

2) Research and Study Skills

3) Principles of Research Design

This module combines the acquisition of postgraduate research and study skills with a firm grounding in social scientific qualitative research methods. Through the assessment, you will relate your learning to the specific issues that arise in relation to researching Islam and Muslims in Britain. Some of the topics covered in this module include:

  • Doing participant observation
  • The ethics of qualitative research
  • Working with documents
  • Discourse analysis
  • Using computers in qualitative research
  • How to do a literature search
  • Building your career
  • Social scientific theories: postmodernism, feminism, positivism, realism, etc.
