Research in Modern European History

Research in the department on Modern European History focuses especially on France, Germany and East Central Europe.
Research on European History covers gender history and women’s history in France; the right and extreme right in France; modern Austria; émigré communities in Eastern Europe; the ethnic Chinese in Europe; denazification and the Allied occupation of Germany; and propaganda and culture in Germany; biography and National Socialism; music and citizenship in Germany; the social history of the German Democratic Republic; German Art; Nazi perceptions of Britain; propaganda; and the history of the Third Reich. One theme which unites many of the staff working in this areas is dictatorships and mass mobilisation in the Twentieth Century.
