The Childhood Research Group at the School of Social Sciences (SOCSI) recently hosted a Question Time event, providing the opportunity for looked after young people and care leavers from across Wales to quiz a panel of policy makers and service providers.

The event was organised with Voices from Care Cymru as part of Care Leavers’ Week and included a line-up of politicians and senior members of service provider organisations. The panel included: Assembly Members; Ken Skates, Jenny Rathbone, David Melding and Mark Drakeford, The Children's Commissioner for Wales Keith Towler, Freda Lewis; CEO of Fostering Network and Lydia Llewellyn; Chair of the Leaving Care Forum.

The audience were given the opportunity to put questions directly to the panel, and care leavers were able to express their views on their experiences to help influence future priorities for the Welsh Government, Local Authorities and other agencies.

The event formed part of a series of activities to celebrate Care Leavers’ week that aimed to inspire and open the doors of higher education to care leavers – one of the most under-represented groups in higher education.

Video from the event can be seen below.

Researchers from the Childhood Research Group have previously collaborated with Voices from Care Cymru on the Learning from Experience project. More information on this project can be found here.
